It's not Rider College (now Rider University), but Trenton State College that
changed its name to The College of New Jersey (alphebetized under The).
And, yes, there was a squabble over the name. Apparently the TSC
administration didn't feel that the old name was chi-chi enough for the
small, well-heeled, liberal arts college image that they have been
cultivating.
I feel rather sorry for future historians who will no doubt be confused by
the change.
