So far not one black timber in 16 years of INDOOR use of the solution. I did
make the mistake of using it outside on a Western red cedar porch.
UUUUUUUUUUUgly. Oh, and don't try it on old barn timber unless it's
resurfaced (planed). That beautiful gray color turns a blotchy brown/black.
Kind of like the wood in a smokehouse with the wrong smell.
As far as drying, the wood seems to absorb the mix rather than it creating a
film. I believe this helps slow the drying of the green timber and reduces
checking.
As far as a base for other coatings, the only overcoat applications have been
polyurethane on timbers in or around shower enclosures. In both cases I asked
the customer to wait a year to allow the timber to shrink some so the finish
wouldn't crack. They look great. One's been on for 13 years.
Just lucky I guess.
