Also, along these lines, check and make sure that ALL parameters are correct
according to the specs on the drive.  I have had the exact same problem when
the Compaq BIOS was short a couple of cylinders with auto detection.  In
some cases it also causes weird problems when formatting the drive.  Hope
this helps.
