Hi List,

I am interested in learning about Red Hat Linux and my plan is to add an
older hard drive (WD Caviar 2340, 340 MB) as a second hard drive on my HP
PII 400, and then install Linux on that drive. Is this the best approach?

The old hard drive has a few sectors identified as bad by scandisk, and I
hope to be able to low level format this drive so as to make the entire
drive usable if possible. What utility should I use to accomplish this?

You may want to visit the following web sites for additional info and a free
d/l of RedHat Linux 6.0, http://www.redhat.com/ . Since Linux is a difficult
OS to master, the following newsgroup will help you as well, comp.os.linux.
The newer versions of RedHat Linux take the headache out of installation
problems by automatically partitioning your HD and setting up the OS for
you. You still must have a good working knowledge of how to properly
configure it though. With respect to the few bad sectors issue you stated,
most HD are not perfect and contain a number of bad sectors. Gibson Research
Corp. makes a utility called Spinrite that helps clear up bad sector
problems. HTH. :-)
