Mint Julep

1 Tbsp. Simple Syrup*
2 to 4 large sprigs fresh mint
Crushed ice
1/4 cup bourbon
1/2 cup tonic water or sparkling water (an option for you wimpy, disgustingly
healthy gen-x folks out there)
Powdered sugar
Mint sprig (optional, but then why call it "Mint" Julep?)
One frosty cold silver cup, preferably from Pappy's old collection (my
favorite part)

Instructions (one serving):

Pour Simple Syrup into a tall glass (add more, if a sweeter drink is
preferred). Add 2 to 4 mint sprigs. Crush mint with the back of a spoon.

Fill glass with crushed ice. Stir in bourbon. If desired, stir in tonic water
or sparkling water. Sprinkle with powdered sugar. Garnish with mint sprig
(mandatory, in my book).

Finally, pull up a settee on the porch (screened, of course, to keep out that
nasty West Nile virus and freshly painted - contact Christopher) and enjoy
the birds and bees. OK, watch the racing horsies if you want to ...


*Simple Syrup: Pour 1/2 cup boiling water over 1/2 cup granulated sugar; stir
until sugar dissolves. Stir in 1/4 cup lightly packed fresh mint leaves.
Cover and chill at least 4 hours. Strain. Store, covered, in refrigerator.
Makes about 3/4 cup.
