I was diagnosed with celiac disease two days ago. I've had chronic health
problems now for over three years and have been to all sorts of
practitioners. Finally, I was put on a no-grain diet by a nutritionist to
help me resolve a case of intestinal yeast -- not because he suspected
celiac disease. After about 6 months I was doing a great deal better, and
he determined that I could move on to my next phase of treatment. He
prescribed mineral supplementation and recommended a diet of 50% protein,
40% carbs, and 10% fat. As far as he was concerned, any grain was fine,
but I was to stick to the proportions listed. Long story short, I ate
wheat products. A couple weeks later I was experiencing burning and
tingling sensations in my feet/legs, as well as muscle twitching. I never
suspected my diet, because I was told by the nutritionist that these odd
symptoms were probably due to an adverse reaction to mineral
supplementation, or even possibly an elevated thyroid T3 level. So I just
kept following a diet that included wheat. By the time I went to a
doctor a couple weeks later, the symptoms were pretty bad. I was
diagnosed with celiac disease. That was two days ago. Although the
symptoms seem a little relieved since I learned what the problem was and
abruptly stopped all grain, it seems that for the past several meals,
even if I'm being excruciatingly careful, my symptoms are exacerbated
about 1/2 hour after eating. Has anyone experienced this? Frankly,
things look pretty bleak at the moment. I could use a few encouraging words.
