I was five when I got my power wheelchair and I remember running into
and over things in the beginning. My grandmother had a hard time adjusting to
my new-found independence. My mom doesn't remember specifically teaching me
to read. She and I would read books together a lot and I do have enough
speech where I could sound out the words. This really helped when I started
school. Sorry I can't offer any suggestions for integrating the Dynavox into
your home setting since my family and friends understand my speech and I
don't need the device at home. I do have to use it with strangers and
fast-paced environments such as a classroom setting. If I can help you in any
way, please let me know.
