I've just built a new (sort of) system and am having problems with Win98.
I've added a new motherboard and 128 MB of DIMM memory. Motherboard is an
Epox MVP3C2 with an AMD K6-2 450 processor and the drives are Maxtor 4.3G
boot (519 MB free) and a Maxtor 13G data drive. After running on an Intel VX
board and IBM P166+ processor with 64 MB RAM, I thought this system would be
a speed demon, but this hasn't proven to be true. Win 98 takes an excessive
amount of time to boot (20+ minutes.) On reboot after installation, I got
the expected 'windows has detected new hardware' message with the 'insert
upgrade disk in the CD' (was running Win98SE at the time.) I did so, and got
several 'file not found' messages in a couple of .cab files - all seemed to
be related to the VIA chipset. On reboot, I again got the slow bootup until
I finally decided a reinstall was in order. Booted into NT (where I am now)
and deleted the windows directory (not a wise move, since I forgot that's
where my Outlook files were stored.) Did the reinstall, and am still getting
the slow boot problems. When it does boot, I continually get out of memory
errors in the Internet Connection Wizard when trying to add or start up any
internet apps, so I have no internet access in that OS and that's where I
spend the majority of my computer time. System speed is acceptable once it's
up and running, though, other than the unexpected out of memory errors.
Anyone have any ideas where to turn for a solution?
