Is it a gradual slowdown over time, or a sporadic, sudden drop? If the
latter, look for and kill Microsoft's FindFast - it's a file indexing
service installed with Office which uses idle time to index all the files on
your hard drive. Only problem is that it's not very good at detecting idle
time.

I suggest defragging your hard drive. Also make sure your hard drive
has plenty of room for swap files.
