Well, having just had 2 kids successfully pass a dairy challenge, I can
tell you what it has done for us. Both of my kids have multiple food
allergies - and they are different. Adding back dairy has allowed me to
give them some cheeses and grab that for lunches. It has allowed me to
use butter and cow's milk in cooking. I can't use soy bc 1 child is
allergic to soy. No one will eat things made w/ rice milk, plus there is
usually a gluten issue. I can't use DariFree bc of the corn issues. I
have not switched their beverages (soy and gf rice milk) to cow's milk
though. It has opened up a few additional packaged/prepared foods like
cheese flavored rice crackers and egg/corn-free gelato.
I was fairly diligent w strict avoidance while nursing both and with
their diets. We would do occasional challenges - although sometimes
unintentional :-) There are other of their allergies where I am not as
strict - merely bc it is next to impossible to avoid corn since it is
everywhere. The things that I normally allow are below a symptom
threshold. Anything that causes symptoms are avoided. I should add that
all of these are "sensitivies" or "intolerances" and not IgE
mediated/anaphalactic allergies.
