Omar Joof lays out conditions for his return
The president of Gamsu, Omar Joof, currently taking refuge in Dakar, Senegal, has stressed that he will not return to The Gambia until "certain institutions" . guarantee his safety.
Speaking over Walf FM, Dakar, yesterday, Mr Joof said assurances of his security given by the IGP and the secretary for the Interior are not enough for him to return home, "because they were present when my colleagues were being shot.
All NGOs, human rights organisations and diplomatic missions, especially the British and US embassies, must intervene to ensure my safety before I could return to The Gambia," Mr Joof said.
He said even the conciliatory remarks made by President Jammeh when he received the Gamsu executive last week were not assuring enough for him.
Mr Joof revealed that he fled to Dakar because "armed bandits" were raiding his house daily in the aftermath of the student riots of April 10 and 11, "harassing my family. My mother was so maltreated that she had to be hospitalised for hypertension," the Gamsu president said.
