Gordon,
I have been wanting to reply to your original post for a few days now.
I also worry about what you are now facing. When I had my hamstrings
lengthened summer 99 and had to learn to walk again, I used a walker,
then a cane for a time. It was very hard for me to go from walking
unassisted to needing the aid. But after I got overe the initial change
it really did help me.

Yep - same thing - I wanted to be un-aided for a long time - & refused to get a cane / walking-stick (I think im a bit stuborn at times)..
but once i got one - I could walk faster, & go more places than i would not normally go.. - quite liberating..

However, if I had to go to a chair, I think I would have much more
difficulty. I know that those on the list who can't walk view it as
liberating to have a chair. And maybe I would come to feel that way
too. But I can't help feeling, cp or not, I should not lose my ability
to walk after I have worked so hard all my life to stay healthy and
strong. I am hoping that I won't have to deal with wheelchair issues
for a very long time if ever. Since my cp is mild I hope it won't be an
issue! But know that there are others out there who feel as you do too.

Were you always able to walk ? - Or in a chair in your early-years ?
When I was younger - I had a wheelchair, - So Im not worried / scared of being in one - Just a bit cautious etc.. (ive never been good with balance - & scared that when i go up/down a curb - or something, the chair will flip over (my main fear).. - I know they rarely do.. - but i'll get to that point when i do..
Other than that - its just normal adjustments i'll need to make - IE opening doors, going to the loo etc..
- and i may need to shift house (dont know yet - depends on how long / IF i need a wheelchair.. - ) ...
But first steps first - go & see the / a specialist..
- Im not sure about other countries, but we go through so much red-tape to get anywhere, - you cant see a specialist without being referred to by a doctor (& paying the $40 for a 10 minute chat to the doctor :-) )
is it the same over in USA ?
Gordon.
