FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Tuesday, October 24th at 11:45 AM former WI Supreme Court Justice Janine Geske will speak on "Restoring the Justice in Criminal Justice." She will be speaking at Madison-area Urban Ministry's annual Lay Leader û Clergy luncheon that is being held this year at Temple Beth El, 2702 Arbor Drive, Madison.

Geske speaks around the State of WI promoting the concept of "restorative justice." She is now a Law Professor at Marquette Law School in Milwaukee. She had served as a criminal division circuit judge for over a decade before Governor Tommy Thompson appointed her to the WI Supreme Court in 1993. In 1998 she stepped down in order to contribute more directly to societal change. She now works with inmates in the prison system, teaches victim-impact classes, and promotes restorative justice in community meetings.

Says Geske, with restorative justice, ôthe community solves the problem instead of leaving it to the justice system and the police alone, where it doesn't get doneà This changes behavior earlier so as they get older they don't commit the same crimes. Its different than anything I have seen in 10 years of working with inmatesà We need to get everyone around the table.ö

During the luncheon, Jackie Millar, a victim of a life-threatening crime, will be given an award for her restorative and preventive service to youth in this community.

This luncheon is also sponsored the MUMÆs Call to Renewal Roundtable on Racism. Their "LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE: OPPOSE HATRED" lawn signs will be available at the luncheon.
