Has anyone seen Notting Hill? The friend of Hugh Grant is in a
wheelchair, and I was really pleased by her portrayal. I think it was a
big step forward for the mass media. She had a large role, dressed
well, was intelligent, was in a committed, loving, relationship, had a
job, had a sense of humor. In other words, she acted like everyone
else. She grappled with issues about her disability, which I've never
seen done before in such a mainstream film. And she did it with humor,
not seeming pitiful in the least. At the same time, it wasn't made into
a big issue, just another trait. Granted, she was injured in an
accident and didn't have a condition like CP, but I don't really think
it matters in this case. I give this film four stars, and not for her
alone. Any other reactions?
