Yes your friend has a winmodem.  And yes there are a few hardware modems for
the PCI slot.

We have discussed this same topic many times in the past.  In fact, we just
finished another round of it 2-3 weeks ago.  If you search the our archives
for the keywords "hardware modem" or "winmodem", I'm sure you will find a
wealth of information about brands, models, and pros/cons for each.
