You didn't mention what operating system you were using, but Windows 98
Second Edition does have magnification facilities built in.  Frankly, about
x3 it gets rather blocky, but x2 is quite good - bearing in mind it's free.
It may also be worth trying out some of the colour contrast schemes they
have as well.

The soon to be released Windows Millennium also has Magnifier, and again
it's free.
