Technical Advisor Position

Background

We are seeking a technical advisor for a significant Internet development
project. The web site has two key aspects which are essential. First,
the site is accessible to people using adaptive computer equipment (screen
readers, screen magnifiers, Braille displays, etc.) as well as a variety of
browsers (lynx, Netscape, Internet Explorer, etc.). Second, the site uses
dynamic HTML technology to personalize information according to member
profiles.

Current Situation and Need

The site is currently in the last phase of basic design with an outside
design consultant. The two principal objectives of the technical advisor
the Agency seeks are to; 1) work with the outside site designers to
complete the basic site, and 2) to work with the Agency team through the
beta testing process to tailor, fix, and reconfigure the site to reflect
the feedback received in the beta testing process. The technical advisor
will be required to set up the site at a host location as well at a
testing/mirror site at the Agency. The advisor will be the principal
technical resource for the Agency through the basic site completion and the
beta testing and launch. The consultant will be expected to support
persons with a wide range of level of technical expertise.

Site Technical Components

The site is written in Cold fusion and is running on a Windows NT platform.
Its underlying database is SQL Server. The site is currently running on
the designer’s server but, when completed, it will be moved to an Internet
site hosting organization as well as to the Agency’s mirror site. The
site itself is not conceptually complex for a dynamic web site. Its
complexity comes largely from the limitations imposed by keeping the site
compatible with adaptive equipment and accessible browsers. The outside
designer’s work is estimated to be about 95% complete.

Specific Tasks

1. Work with designer to complete basic site
2. Ensure proper documentation is prepared by designer
3. Select and install basic site on a web host
4. Maintain web host relationship
5. Install basic site on test/mirror system at the Agency
6. Review and understand the sites Cold Fusion code and re-write as
necessary or appropriate
7. Participate in the beta testing process of the site
8. Participate as a member of the team at the Agency developing the site
9. Provide technical advice and support in establishing/modifying the
database and its tables
10. Make site modifications based on feedback from the beta testing process
11. Assist with general technical questions concerning the site and its
accessibility in the Agency’s office
12. Maintain site operator and user documentation
