Hi,
        It sounds like Win98 misdetected your video card.  I have seen that a few
times.  While in Safe Mode, change the display adapter to Standard VGA.
 That might help you get into normal mode.  Then change the adapter to the
driver disks supplied by your laptop manufacturer.
