A 56K modem will only connect at above 33.6K if one of the modems has a
digital connection to the telco, be it an ISDN or other purely digital
connection. The only analog connection allowed in the chain is between you
and the telco. This is great for what was meant for 56K modems, connecting
to an ISP which almost certainly has a digital connection to the telco
(probably cheaper these days). For two people connecting to each other, 56K
is not possible unless one has ISDN and a 56K compatible ISDN terminal
adapter. Now the fact that you only connect at 26K suggests to me that the
phone lines in your area aren't the best, cheances are if you try to connect
to each other more than once you may get a better connection. Good luck,
