CAT 5 cable is short for refering--most commonly--Catagory 5 Unshielded
Twisted Pair Cable. Usually with 4 pairs (8 wires).
This is the cable of choice in the Networking industry/field. Most new
Houses are being wired for phone and Networking purposes.
If you have purchased Phone Line cable at Wal-Mart or Radio Shack that is
normally Catagory 3 cable.
There are, however, standards being considered for CAT 6 and CAT 7 cable
that would allow for faster data transmission.
Enhanced Cat 5 currently allows for 100Mbps when using just 4 wires and with
Gigabit Ethernet (1000Mbps) using all wires.
