This has been discussed a number of times on the lowcarb list,
and my impression is that research has falsified the hypothesis
that artificial sweeteners cause a "conditioned" rise in insulin
levels.  Diana Schwarzbein claims that aspartame acts as a
stimulant and causes insulin release via that mechanism, but
again I don't know of any science to support this.
