Oliva and others: Good news for you: yams (re actually sweet
potatoes--including red garnets, jewels, Jersey sweets, white sweet
potatoes, boniatos). But sweet potatoes are NOT related to potatoes
botanically. They are NOT NIGHSHADES. They are members of the morninglory
family; a different species altogether. They contain NO SOLANINE whatsoever
(the poisonous alkaloid in potatoes). So, you CAN eat them without the
joint problems or toxic potato effects. Btw: They don't taste as good raw,
grated, tried that! ;-(

Re: They were always like dessert for me.

Yes, I can relate. We used to eat them (or winter squash) often, sometimes
daily when were into the macrobiotic/vegan thing. The longer we eat meat
foods, fat, and non-starchy vegetables, the less we desire them and the less
we enjoy them; when we do eat them (occasional splurge; there could be
worse!!!). You may find eventually that the flatulence they ignite
(incite?) if eaten in quantity or much counterbalances the pleasure. Then
again, they might not do that for you! Regardless, they have helped/helped
many people I know (myself included) break away from potatoes and grains
gracefully!
