'm a newbie too.  A few months ago I had 30 pounds to lose, and accomplished
this no sweat following a paleolithic diet.

Interesting you should bring up spotting...Just prior to beginning this way
of life, I was diagnosed with Polycysitc Ovary Syndrome (linked as a
pre-diabetic condition), hadn't had a period in 6 months, and was told I
would never be able to have children without fertility intervention.  Having
diabetes in my family as well, paleolithic nutrition sounded like the best
route for me to go.  Less than a month after embarking on this way of eating,
I had a normal period, and have had one every 28 days for the past four
months (I have never been "normal" in my life.)  So, it would seem that this
way of eating does have some effect on hormone levels.

How long have you been following a paleolithic diet?  It may take some time
to balance out.
