I've been on vacation, Holly, hence the delay in replying. Three
years ago my BP was getting high: 150/110 at the highest. Both
of my parents have been on BP meds for decades. In fact, my
father's hypertension was noted when he entered the Navy at age
17. Anyway, when I went to a moderate-carb non-paleo Zone diet,
my BP dropped to 120/80 within a week and has stayed at around
that (sometimes a bit lower) ever since. It is my understanding
that elevated insulin causes water and electrolyte retention, the
underlying cause of hypertension. Reducing carbs has a diuretic
effect, which can correct the condition in some (but probably not
all) cases.
