MTBE is a gasoline additive that oxidizes the gas to burn better and
reduce air pollution. The problem is, that it binds with water very well,
and is showing up in wells all over the U.S. It's use came from the clean
air act in the 80's, and was cheaper than Ethol alcohol. All the gasoline in
the U.S. has it and most underground tanks at filling stations leak. Methyl
T-Butyl Ether, is now the #1 pollutant of ground water on Long Island.
