What about some of the smaller "University Press" houses? Ken, it's
virtually impossible (notice I said virtually, not totally) impossible
to break into writing at the "book" level--especially kids books.
Boatloads of stay-at-home moms have had the same idea for the last ten
years.
You might try starting out with a weekly column at a small-town
newspaper. It would be a way to get a by-line and possibly exposure to
a larger publisher. You gotta take baby steps when writing, and don't
be disouraged by rejection slips. I've got boxes of 'em.
