Rob,
The advice you're getting about this is very good. The one thing that I
would do differently is to start with well steamed ground meats and some
raw veggies and fruits and gradually steam the meat less and less over a
period of time until it is finally raw, then begin giving the
chicken/turkey wings/backs, ground meats, etc. I would add eggs, but not
raw due to the risk of salmonella poisoning. I do know of one case of
raw foods dogs who got poisoned through salmonella laden eggs. Somehow
the meats don't cause the same problem.
The reason for doing it this way is that if your companions have been on
a fully cooked and processed diet they no longer have the digestive
juices neccessary for safely eating raw meats and especially bones. If
you start them out gradually you are much less likely to shock their
digestive system and possibly wind up with a vet bill and a reluctance
to go raw, which would be a shame as that is so much more healthy for
them.
So, I would move them into the diet you will be feeding (this also
should be gradual in my opinion), but I would cook it for awhile.
Good luck,
Stacie Lorenson
