Subject: Olmstead advocacy updates!

Some exciting Olmstead advocacy updates:

The City of Austin today passed a resolution today supporting most
integrated setting and asking the Gov and Attorney General of TX to get off
the Olmstead Amicus, county commissioners here will be considering one soon
too! These will be forwarded to the appropriate national groups (NLC, NAOC,
etc)

************

The Catholic Archdiocese of El Paso passed a resolution in support of most
integrated setting and asking the Gov and Attorney General of TX to get off
the Olmstead Amicus, and sent with it a letter which began:

"On the Mexican side of the bridge between Ciudad Juarez and El Paso people
with disabilities sit between lanes of cars and hold out stryofoam cups to
beg. What a remarkable difference that sight is from the delegation of the
local Americans with Disabilities organization that has just visited me!
The people who came today have their human dignity in tact. But they do not
take it for granted. Rahter they are keeping vigilance that the hard earned
legislation guaranteeing them access to public services is not diluted. On
their visit today the three men and two women asked my support for the
integration requirement of the [ADA]...."

El Paso city council has already passed a resolution similar to Austin's!

Now the Austin Archdiocese has passed a similar resolution and is also
writing our Governor and Attorney General...

In Colorado they have developed a post card folks can send their Gov. In
addition, a popular restaurant in town has agreed to use a placemat designed
by local ADAPT folks to educate their customers about Olmstead and the Colo
Gov's anti-disability stance on the case, and his refusal to meet or talk
with people with disabilities. A postcard is attached so those who are so
inclined can drop the Gov a note.... For a copy call Atlantis ADAPT
303/733-9324!
