Subject: Internet Explorer 4.01 QFE

As many of you may already be aware, Microsoft has just released the update
to Internet Explorer 4.01. This update adds the necessary MSAA interface
allowing full compatibility with the latest versions of Window-Eyes.

Microsoft is calling the update a QFE which stands for Quick Fix
Engineering. They are not releasing a new Service Release or Service Pack.
Since this is not a service pack, it is required that you currently have
SP1 (service pack 1) of Internet Explorer 4.01 installed before installing
the new QFE. This is very important. If you are running Windows 98, you
already have service pack 1 installed so you do not have to deal with
installing it. If you are not sure if you have the service pack 1 already
installed, you can either check the "About Internet Explorer" option in the
help menu or you can just download it and install it anyway. The procedure
for downloading both the service pack 1 and the QFE are listed below.

You should download the service release first to your hard drive (if
necessary). Then download the QFE to your hard drive. Then run the
service release file (if necessary). Finally, run the QFE. Make sure you
reboot your machine when requested to do so before continuing.

You may or may not be asked by Microsoft for certain information before you
can download the service pack or the qfe. If you are prompted, you must
fill it out before you can continue.

Procedure to get SP1 (service pack 1):

1) Go to http://www.microsoft.com/ie/download and proceed to download only
Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 1. You need to follow the directions
to do this. Save the file to your hard disk.

Procedure to get the QFE (quick fix engineering):

1) Go to ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/softlib/mslfiles/msaaupd.exe

This URL points directly to the executable so it will ask you if you want
to save or open it. You should save it to your hard drive.

At this point you should run the service release file you downloaded (if
applicable). Then execute the QFE file you downloaded (msaaupd.exe).

Your system is now running Internet Explorer 4.01 service pack 1 with the
updated QFE.

Window-Eyes 2.1.N has just been placed on our ftp sight. This version is
(for all practicable purposes) version 3.0. Although you can use older
betas with the QFE, please use the latest possible version which is 2.1.N.

Regards,
Doug
