As of now, no operating system uses the alpha field /1\ of a 32-bit
mode, consequently the 32-bit mode will not give any better image
quality over a 24-bit mode. It may work faster due to "32-bitness" of
the CPU and the buses, but this is not always true - this depends on the
software used as well!
32-bit mode is (probably) only used by 3D-accelerators that take
advantage of the alpha field.
/1\ (alpha mode) - transparency value of the pixel, 256 levels between
transparent and opaque.
