Sounds like it could be either.  I work with mostly Toshiba laptops and that is a
common symton that it is going bad.  Usually, when I give my hardware guys
in-house a  laptop with what you are experiencing, then they just replace the
screen and connection.  The connection is a ribbon wire from the mobo to the
screen.  Much easier (and probably more cost effective) if they replace both.
