My mom had problems with 2 of her WD Caviar drives, and I'm not sure if the
problem will be present in and 8.4 Gig drive from WD. The problem in her
first drive that she heard a humming from the hard drive, and then it shorted
out her motherboard. She got a new one and it started to hum and make weird
noises too, only this time the reason it was replaced was because of the
power supply blowing up and causing her to replace her hard drive, her power
supply, and her motherboard. But I personbally believe that if the PS didn't
go out, the hard drive would've sooner or later. I mean I personally have
had almost no problems with the WD Caviars and I have the same ones my mother
had and still has (5.4 Gigs), but still, she had to get 3 hard drives, 2 of
which she paid for out of her pocket. I know the high end IBM Hard drives
are rated good, and so are Seagate's high-ends, but Seagate has been a very
reliable drive for usbefore, and I would recommend it, the IBM's, or the
Quantum Hard Drives. We only got WD drives cause they were cheap and pretty
reliable. But if I went to buy another, it would be a Seagate, an IBM, or a
Quantum Fireball (which is actually good for the money too). I don't know
anything about Maxtors though.
