This sounds like what used to happen to WinFax every time
I changed something about my modem...
The "link" that the system had to the modem from WinFax
was severed, and I had to jump through all kinds of "hoops"
to get WinFax to "like" the modem again...
Another one of these software/hardware/OS "integration" issues...

The above is just a "concept"...  And may be of no help at all...
