I use win98se to build/upgrade computers, never saw problem like this.
If you was a win95/98 user, there should be no problem to upgrade to
win98se. If there are imcompatibilty problems between win98se and HP
hardware, then it is HP problem to replace it. I would bring the
computer back to HP.
