There are actually TWO notches, ecah with its corresponding nub. First of
all, these will not come close to lining up if you have the DIMM backwards.
Secondly, the precise positioning of the notches depends upon the voltage
and technology of the DIMM in question, and similarly the nubs correspond to
the requirements of the motherboard.
While it can take a certain amount of force to insert a DIMM for the first
time, this force should not be so great as to approach breaking the nub -- if
either nub does not line up exactly with a notch, this DIMM is not of a type
that this motherboard can use.
