NCIL to House: Support H.R. 1180.
October 13, 1999
Dear Congressional Representative:
The National Council on Independent Living (NCIL) is writing to you to
reaffirm its strong support of the Work Incentives Improvement Act
(WIIA) H.R. 1180 and to ask you to continue your support of this bill
as introduced. WIIA, currently in the House Ways & Means Committee, is
an excellent step towards giving people with disabilities a real
opportunity to be successful in their employment endeavors.
Two hundred and forty-seven (247) members of Congress are co-
sponsoring H.R. 1180. NCIL and its membership, including individuals
with disabilities, community based centers for independent living,
statewide independent living councils, and other grassroots disability
organizations, have worked extensively these past few months
discussing with members of Congress ways in which H.R. 1180 will allow
people with disabilities to become employed and also become tax paying
citizens. A significant majority of the House of Representatives
support H. R. 1180 as THE BILL to bring to the House floor for a vote.
Representative Hulshof is proposing to introduce a new bill, the
"Ticket to Work and Work Incentives Improvement Act" this afternoon.
The language in the Ticket to Work and Work Incentives Improvement Act
significantly limits the opportunities for people with disabilities to
return to work or to gain and maintain employment.
Please contact Representative Hulshof and the other member of the Ways
and Means Committee and ask them to make sure H.R. 1180, as
introduced, is the bill to come to the House floor for a vote.
Seventy-one percent of working-aged individuals with disabilities, who
are currently unemployed due to social security work disincentives,
are counting on Congress to do the right thing. Please continue to
support H.R. 1180 and make the Work Incentives Improvement Act a law
before the end of this year. H.R. 1180 is THE BILL people with
disabilities need, anything less will not only be ineffective, but may
in fact harm those who want to work.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact Marcie Roth, NCIL
Director of Advocacy and Public Policy at 703/525-3406.
Sincerely,
Paul W. Spooner Michael Oxford Bryon MacDonald, Chair
