I'm glad to hear Leon raise the concern, and I have to agree with the responses
from Ed Burns, Frank Scott and Bruce Sanford. To me, the list has lately been
overtaken by a dispute between Martin Smith and Milutin, a dispute in which I
have no interest whatsoever and in which I can scarcely see any relation to
Chomsky's work. In this respect, I quite disagree with Martin Smith's response
to Leon's message: purpose 1 does NOT "cover everything that has been discussed
recently", at least as I understand it. I would qualify purpose 1 to add "_as
it relates to the work and ideas of Noam Chomsky_". Granted that's not exactly
how Leon worded it just now, but this is after all the Chomsky list, not
alt.politics or alt.anarchism.

Subject: Serious concerns about the direction of this list

Chomsky subscriber:

I have many serious concerns about the direction that this list has taken.

The CHOMSKY list is an international network for discussing of the ideas
of Noam Chomsky.

The purpose of the list is to:

1. To serve as a forum for the free expression of political ideas.

2. The scholarly discussions of linguistics.

3. To be a resource to its members, by continually identifying the
thousands of resources, materials, organizations and Internet sites
revolving around the work, philosophy, political ideas of Noam Chomsky.

4. A clearinghouse for the distribution of information on academic and
   political conferences, publication opportunities, fellowship
information, academic grants, and job openings of interest.

Subscribers are encouraged to post questions, comments, or announcements
of interest to individuals working on topics related to Chomsky's writings
and lectures. The Chomsky list is without restriction according to
interest or professional affiliation.

I feel we are falling far short of these ideas.

What does the group say?
