As I understand it, East German gangs came to Amsterdam and stole all the
bikes.  Amsterdam is more-or-less a bike borrowing place anyway... you just
steal yourself a bike.  That's why all the bikes there are crap, and why
they dredge up large numbers of them every year or so.
