Hello all,
As you may know the son of Elijah and Clara Muhammad and
leader of the largest Islamic movement among African
Americans
will make his first visit to Beloit College TOMORROW. Imam
W.D.Mohammed's visit is part of our recognition of Women's
History Month. His public lecture, focusing on the
contributions of Muslim women, begins at 7 p.m. in the
Moore Study Lounge, second floor, Pearsons.
Imam Mohammed succeeded his father as leader of the Nation
of Islam in 1975 and began to steer the movement towards the
beliefs of more mainstream Muslims. Today his organization
is called the American Society of Muslims, and is supported
by an estimated 2.5 million Muslims across the globe.
At the public lecture, Beloit College will become the first
institution of higher education to organize a library fund
to honor the female social activism of his mother and other
pioneering Muslim women. This fund, supported by donations
of Muslims and others, will support Morse Library purchases
of resources about African American Muslims. Imam Mohammed
will receive an autographed copy of Witnessing &
Testifying: Black Women, Religion and Civil Rights by Dr.
Rosetta Ross -- the first purchase of The Clara Muhammad
Library Fund.
Tell your friends, and be sure to come yourself. This is
a historic occasion for our college and for those whose
struggle has made possible the emergence of voices history
has tried to silence.
