Hi Folks,
Over nine months after riling college communities across the nation with
a controversial advertisement denouncing reparations for slavery,
conservative speaker and author David Horowitz will speak tonight as
part of the University of WI Distinguished Lecture series.
Some time ago, the Multicultural Student Coalition protested and
publicly criticized Horowitz, when he released an ad, "Ten Reasons Why
Reparations is a Bad Idea", which has sparked emotional reaction on the
UW campus and initiating a widespread debate over free speech.

Last week, political activist and author Randall Robinson spoke out in
favour of reparations for slavery. The black advocate for reparations
emphasized that Black history is being repressed. The lack of war
memorials in Washington, D.C., and the lack of people of color depicted
in art in public buildings on the Washington D.C. mall speak volumes. "
No [Harriet] Tubman, no Frederick Douglas, no [Sojourner] Truth and no
indication that slavery has ever happened.

Robinson argued that the jewish people have been able to recover and
survive in the face of adversity because they have a history that dates
back 4,000 years and they learn about it, whereas black people are not
taught as much of their past. He lamented that America has lost the
sense of what democratic responsibility is, that America has somehow
confused the essence of democracy with the "ritual" of elections.

Among the host of other things, Robinson said, the disproportional
number of people of color in prisons, which he termed " neo-slavery" of
our time, recounting that black men comprised 12% of all convicted
nonviolent drug offenses, yet 75% of those imprisoned for these
offenses, and that overall, 50% of those sentenced to death were black.
"Democracy is insufficient and inexact and requires all of us to be
vigilant, informed and visionary at such time where our elementary
freedoms are being eroded".

Meanwhile, David Horowitz's lecture tonight is expected to pull a large
itching audience wanting to hear arguments against Robinson's need for
slavery reparations and ongoing movement for racial equality.
