African Studies Program Memo

MEMORIAL SERVICE
A memorial service was held to celebrate the life of Frederic Mwene-Lokole
Songolo at Covenant Presbyterian Church on Tuesday January 4 , one year
after Freddy Songolo's death. Aliko Songolo's younger brother, Freddy, died
of undiagnosed liver cancer in Dar es Salaam where his mother, his widow
and three pre-school daughters live. A memorial trust fund has been
established for the children at Firststar Bank in Madison. Checks may be
made out to the Freddy Songolo Children Trust.

LANGUAGE INSTITUTE
The Summer Cooperative African Language Institute (SCALI) will take place
at the UW-Madison this summer from June 12 through August 4. Languages
which will be taught are: Chichewa, Zulu, Setswana, Xhosa, Swahili, Bamana,
Yoruba, Wolof, Hausa, and Tigrinya. Please check our website

Intensive Advanced Kiswahili Group Project Abroad in Tanzania. An
eight-week intensive Kiswahili Program at the Institute of Kiswahili and
Foreign Languages, Zanzibar, will be offered by the Association of African
Studies Programs (AASP), and the African Language Teachers' Association
with the support of the US Department of Education Fulbright-Hays Group
Projects Abroad (GPA) Program from June 19-August 11, 2000. The Program
will be directed by the University of Pennsylvania & the University of
Georgia and affiliated with the University of Dar es Salaam. Application

Twelfth Annual Graduate Student Symposium hosted by Department of French
and Italian , UW-Madison. April 8, 2000. Papers for this interdisciplinary
symposium must be related to the field of French or Italian Studies and may
include topics such as film studies, comparative literature, art history,
linguistics, language pedagogy, cultural studies, etc. For further

Undergraduate Research Symposium 2000: Celebrating Research, Creative
