Why won't doctors test for CD? I have had many seemingly unrelated symptoms
for many years and have seen specialists for such varied disorders as severe
hay fever/asthma, colitis, chronic pneumonia, hypothyroidism, a "demyelinating
process of unknown origin", narcolepsy, chronic hives, bone pain, and
just plain exhaustion.
Last year, it occured to me that some of my health problems might be
inter-related. I cross-referenced some of my symptoms on the Internet and the
idea of CD kept coming up. When I suggested the possibility to my internist,
he assured me there was no chance of CD since I didn't have chronic diarrhea.
He also said that my hypertension and high cholesterol precluded the
possibility since "celiac disease causes low cholesterol NOT high cholesterol".
For more than a year, I've been too exhausted to work a steady job so I lost my
health insurance. I sold my home to raise some money for medical care but I
don't even know where to turn for help. I can pay for some testing but where
do I find a doctor to even order the tests? My current medications cost about
$300 a month and I am still miserable, so a few hundred dollars for antibody
testing sounds like a reasonable gamble to me. I live in the San Diego area
but could travelto L.A. or Mexico or... Any suggestions would be much
appreciated.
(I'm just so tired of feeling like a hypochondriac!)
