He could possibly have peripheral neuropathy, especially if he also
has the numbness and tingling in his legs.  This is a frequent side effect
of diabetes, but could also be "ideopathic", meaning they don't know
what causes it.  The drug neurontin is sometimes used to treat it, but
at his age the side effects may be worse than the condition.
