Thanks to whom ever mentioned the modem caller ID. command,
just for encouragement, it works on my relatively new U.S. robotics
external sportster 33.6 modem.

Of course it means you gotta leave your computer hooked to the modem
all the time, but maybe a used 286 lying around for the purpose isn't such
a bad idea.
