BRAILLE NOTE TAKERS
Aria: Small, hand-held computer with a Perkins-style Braille
keyboard. Includes a type 1 PCMCIA slot MS-DOS version 6.0,
telecommunications software, word processor, diary, address/phone
book, and speech. Robotron LTD of Australia. Available from
Technologies for the Visually Impaired. Price: $1,245.
Braille Companion: This device is similar to the KeyNote
Companion (described later in this document) except that it has a
Perkins-style Braille keyboard for input and a Braille translator.
HumanWare, Inc. Price: $2,195.
Braille Desk: This device is the same as the TransType
(described later in this document) except that it has a Braille
keyboard for input. Artic Technologies. Price: $1,495.
Braille Lite 2000: This is a small, battery-operated note
taker with a built-in 18-cell refreshable Braille display, Braille
keyboard, and speech. It is a Braille 'n Speak 2000 with a
refreshable Braille display (see below for Braille 'n Speak 2000
description). The newest model contains 2 megabytes of flash memory.
Blazie Engineering. Price: $3,395.
Braille Lite 40: Battery-operated note taker with a 40-cell
refreshable Braille display, Braille keyboard, and cursor routing
buttons. Otherwise similar to Braille Lite 18 and Braille n' Speak
2000 (see below). The Braille Lite 40 however, comes with 4
megabytes of flash memory. Blazie Engineering. Price: $5,500.
Braillepad: A compact note taker with a Braille keyboard and
embedded cursor pad. Includes Artic Speech, powerful text editor,
Grade 2 back translator, calculator, terminal program and book
reader, reminders/alarms, etc. Can function as an external
synthesizer. Artic Technologies. Price: $995.
Braille 'n Speak 2000: Small, battery-operated computer with
Braille keyboard which can be used as a note taker or speech
synthesizer. Includes scientific calculator, calendar, stopwatch,
etc. It also has the ability to run external programs such as a
database management system, a checkbook program, and a
telecommunications package. Contains 2 megabytes of flash memory.

BrailleX Compact: A portable computer with integrated
refreshable Braille display, light weight and equipped with a
Pentium processor. Has a 40-cell 8-dot piezo-electric Braille
display, integrated cursor routing keys, 86-key integrated computer
keyboard, 8 megabytes of ram expandable to 40 megabytes, 500
megabyte integrated hard disk, 3.5-inch removable floppy disk drive,
integrated 16-bit stereo sound with two speakers. Operating MS-DOS

Ergo Braille: This is significantly smaller than the
Braillepad, featuring an ergomonic keypad. It also doubles as a very
compact speech synthesizer. Artic Technologies. Price: $995.
Mountbatten Brailler: This device can be used as a note taker,
Braille printer, electronic Braille writer, or as a "Braille
typewriter"--accepting characters from a standard QWERTY keyboard.
There are optional forward and reverse translators, and the unit can
be powered by a battery or by AC. HumanWare, Inc. Price: $2,495 to
$3,250, depending on options.
SuperBraille-LT: Leading-Edge Braille and speech access with
built-in 40-cell 8-dot Braille display, 8 navigation keys, built-in
enhanced 101 QWERTY keyboard, one standard 9-pin RS-232 Braille
display port and a 9-pin serial port, four PCMCIA Type II slots, CD-
ROM voice and sound, and 16 megabytes of memory. Advanced Access

KeyNote Companion: Pulse Data International's small, hand-held
palm top computer/personal organizer that includes word processor,
spell checker, diary/calendar, address list manager, and terminal
software. HumanWare, Inc. Price: $1,995.
Myna: Small, 1-pound 3-ounce, hand-held 386 computer which
includes built-in DECtalk speech synthesizer, organizer with address
book, scheduler, and note taker. Four megabytes of memory and two
PCMCIA Type II slots. Screen review programs such as Vocal-Eyes and
ASAP are available. Myna Corporation. Price: $1,795.
SQWERT: A talking QWERTY note taker/synthesizer with the same
features as Braille Pad and Ergo Braille. Artic Technologies. Price:
$995.
Transtype: A note taker/synthesizer with a QWERTY keyboard,
editor, address book, terminal program, talking clock, and
stopwatch. This device has both serial and parallel ports. Artic
Technologies. Price: $1,495.
Type 'n Speak: This device is the same as the Braille 'n Speak
2000 except that it has a regular computer-style keyboard instead of
a Braille keyboard. Blazie Engineering. Price: $1,399.
BRAILLE PRINTERS
Braille Blazer: Small, 15-CPS Braille printer with speech
output. Blazie Engineering. Price: $1,695.
Braille Bookmaker: Fifty-pound, 80-CPS interpoint Braille
printer with built-in Doubletalk speech synthesizer. The menus are
now spoken, and the printer can be used as an external speech
synthesizer. Enabling Technologies Company. Price: $8,995.
Braille Express: This printer is available in two speeds--a
100-CPS and a 150-CPS interpoint Braille printer, similar in design
to the Braille Bookmaker. Both of these printers are now shipped
with Doubletalk speech included. Enabling Technologies Company.
Price: $10,500 for the 100-CPS model, and $14,995 for the 150-CPS
model.
Braille-n-Print: Back-translator translates Braille back into
ASCII code and transmits to ink printer. Allows multiple copies of
Braille and print. Requires a Perkins Braille Writer. HumanWare,
Inc. Price: $995.
Braillo: Single-sided and interpoint Braille embossers
designed for large-volume use. Different models available including
the Braillo Comet, Braillo 200, Braillo 400S, and the Braillo 400SR
with printing speeds of 75, 200, 400, and 400 CPS respectively. The
Comet is single-sided, the other three models are interpoint
embossers. They are all tractor-feed printers except for the 400SR
which prints on a continuous roll of paper. Manufactured by Braillo,

Everest D: This is an interpoint embosser with an approximate
speed of 100 CPS that embosses on single sheets of paper. Sighted

Impacto: High-speed interpoint Braille embosser from Thiel
GMBH of Germany. Manufacturer-rated print speed, 850 pages per hour.
Sighted Electronics. Price: $37,500.
Index Basic D: This is a compact interpoint embosser that uses
tractor-feed paper and prints at an approximate speed of 100 CPS.
Sighted Electronics or Young Opportunities for the Blind. Price:
$3,295.
Index Basic S: Same as Basic D except it prints single-sided
Braille rather than interpoint. Sighted Electronics. Price:
$2,595.
Index 4x4 Professional: An interpoint Braille embosser that
automatically reformats text so that it is presented in a magazine
format. This embosser can use ordinary card stock paper. The
embosser comes with its own sound enclosure. Sighted Electronics.
Price: $8,295.
Interpoint 03: Single-sided, 300-CPS embosser that prints on
a continuous roll of paper and cuts it off as it goes. Manufactured
by the Interpoint Company in Belgium. Price: $42,000
(approximate).
Interpoint 55: Interpoint, high-speed embosser, rated at 800
CPS that prints on a continuous roll of paper. It can also print
sideways in a magazine style with double pages. Interpoint. Price:
$77,000.
Juliet: This is a 40-CPS interpoint embosser. Enabling
Technologies Company. Price: $3,995.
Marathon Brailler: High-speed, 200-CPS single-sided Braille
embosser. Enabling Technologies Company. Price: $14,995.
MPRINT: Attaches to a Perkins Braille Writer and back
translates everything written on the Perkins for printing on an ink-
print printer. Requires Perkins Braille Writer. Telesensory. Price:
$995.
Ohtsuki Printer: Produces Braille and print. American
Thermoform Corporation. Price: $4,695.
Ohtsuki Typewriter: Standard typewriter-style keyboard that
prints in Braille and print simultaneously. Does not do Grade 2
Braille unless you type the proper ASCII characters on the keyboard.

Paragon Braille Embosser: This is a single-sided Braille
embosser that prints at a rate of 40 characters per second. The
embosser is a tractor-feed embosser which can accommodate a variety
of paper sizes and weights. A single-sheet feeder is also available.
HumanWare, Inc. Price: $3,295.
Porta-Thiel: This is a small lightweight printer from Thiel
GMBH of Germany. It can print on single sheets or continuous paper
at approximately 10 CPS. Imported by Sighted Electronics. Price:
$1,895.
Porta-Thiel Interpoint: Same as Porta-Thiel, except it prints
interpoint Braille. Sighted Electronics. Price: $2,895.
Romeo Braille Printer (RB-25 and Romeo Classic): Braille
embossers. Single-sided printers that print at 25 and 40 CPS,
respectively. Enabling Technologies Company. Price: $2,295 and
$3,795, respectively.
TED 600: Interpoint Braille embosser that prints at
approximately 350 CPS. Enabling Technologies Company. Price:
$37,500.
Thiel Beta X-10: High-speed interpoint Braille embosser (300
CPS). Sighted Electronics. Price: $63,000.
Thomas: Single-sided, 40-CPS desktop printer. This printer is
physically designed like the Juliet; that is, in a desktop-style
case instead of with a handle and lid like the Romeo. It is
internally similar to the Romeo, however. Enabling Technologies
Company. Price: $3,295.
Thomas with ET Speaks: Similar to the Thomas, this printer has
a double-talk speech synthesizer which allows the user to hear
spoken feedback while configuring the printer via the menus. The
synthesizer can also be used as a speech synthesizer with many
popular screen readers. Enabling Technologies Company. Price:
$3,395.
Transend: System produces print and Braille on the same page.
The document is run through the ink-printer first, then the Braille
printer. Can produce large print as well. Enabling Technologies
Company. Price: $4,600, which includes an ink-print printer, Thomas
embosser, and Transend box with Duxbury Braille translation software
in ROM.
VersaPoint Braille Embosser: Braille embosser prints 40 CPS,
produces graphics and multiple copies. Blazie Engineering. Price:
$3,795.
VersaPoint Duo: Similar to original VersaPoint, but it is an
interpoint embosser. Blazie Engineering. Price: $3,995.

REFRESHABLE BRAILLE DISPLAYS
Alva Braille Terminal: 43- and 83-cell desktop Braille
displays. Can use either serial or parallel connections. Imported
from Holland by HumanWare, Inc. Price: $8,995 to $14,495.
Alva Braille Terminal (portable): Available as 23- or 43-cell
models with batteries. HumanWare, Inc. Price: $4,995 to $7,495.
Alva Delphi Multimedia 440: This is a portable, battery-
operated unit with 40 Braille cells and three status cells. The unit
features a double- touch cursoring system, meaning that there are
two rows of cursor-routing buttons above the Braille cells. These
buttons can control both Braille and speech functions as well as
mouse functions depending upon the screen reader being used. Screen
readers that support this display include JAWS for Windows,
OutSpoken for Windows, and Slimware Window Bridge. HumanWare, Inc.

Alva Delphi Multimedia 480: Similar to the Delphi Multimedia
440, this unit has 80 Braille cells and five status cells. It is a
desktop unit, rather than a portable unit. HumanWare, Inc. Price:
$10,995.
Braillex 2D: 80-cell refreshable Braille display with a
vertical strip that shows attribute and screen information.
Available from Sighted Electronics. Price: $16,500.
Braillex 2D-Lite: This is a 40-cell refreshable Braille
display which, like the Braillex 2D, offers the vertical strip of 13
cells to provide additional information about screen attributes and
layout. Sighted Electronics. Price: $7,775.
Braillex Tiny: This is a 40-cell, 8-dot, piezo-electric
Braille display which uses rechargeable batteries or power supply.
Same as the others except that it does not offer the vertical strip
of cells. Sighted Electronics. Price: $6,450.
Braille Window 40: Offers Braille access to Windows
environments. Available in a 45-cell portable model, runs on AC or
built-in rechargeable battery. Six programmable touch cursor keys,
serial and parallel interfaces, parallel pass-through for attaching
printer, five thumb key controls, and five cells to monitor status
information. The firm-ware is loaded into flash ROM. Programmable
keys allow users to navigate Windows with fewer keystrokes.

Braille Window Desktop model: Same as Braille Window 40 except

PowerBraille: A 40-cell display from Blazie. Comes with
ScreenPower Braille support software that controls the unit.
ScreenPower Braille can also support speech synthesizers

RBT 40: This device is a compact, 40-cell refreshable Braille
display that can be used with many popular Windows screen readers.
The manufacturer states that this display has a battery life of
approximately 40 hours. The display is controlled by three buttons
on either side of the device and can be connected to either a serial

Braille Talk PC: IBM compatible system. GW Micro. Price: $195.
Cipher: Translation software available for PCs running Windows

Duxbury Braille Translator: IBM compatible systems under DOS
or Windows, MacIntosh, and a number of mini and mainframe computers.
Duxbury Systems, Inc. Price: $595 for PC and Mac versions.
E-Z Braille: Braille translator that automatically handles
ASCII and WordPerfect files. It is intended as a way for sighted
persons to produce Braille easily. Easy Talk. Price: $250.
Mega Dots: Combination Braille translator and word processor.
Imports many file types including HTML and uses "Braille styles" to
format. Now has spell checker which can correct common errors that
occur in scanned text. Braille Planet, Inc. Price: $500.
NFBTRANS: IBM compatible systems. In 1992 the source code was
released to the public domain and has since been modified. Foreign
language versions are also available. NFB NET. Price: free.
ProBraille: Apple compatible systems. Microtalk. Price: $150.
Turbo Braille: IBM and compatible systems. Handles ASCII,
WordPerfect, and WordStar files. Includes partial implementation of
Grade 3 Braille and tools for including graphics and block print
letters into documents. Available as shareware from Second Sight
Software. Price: $295.
TDD's FOR THE DEAF-BLIND
Braille Screen Communicator: This portable device allows the
deaf-blind to communicate by means of an LCD display as well as an
8-cell refreshable Braille display. The deaf-blind individual types
a message on a standard Perkins style Braille keyboard. The message
appears on the LCD display. The sighted individual types a message
on a standard QWERTY keyboard and this message is shown on an 8-cell
refreshable braille display. CTM Lagarde (Netherlands). Price:
$1,958.
InfoTouch: TDD for the deaf-blind that employs either a Romeo
RB-20 or Romeo Classic Braille embosser for its Braille output.

TeleBraille III: This TDD system employs a 20-cell refreshable
Braille display and a Braille keyboard. Blazie Engineering. Price:=20

VOICE ACTIVATED SOFTWARE
DragonDictate: Voice-activated system which can be used to
control a computer or run applications. There are four versions of
this software.
DragonDictate Starter: this DOS edition has a 5,000 active
vocabulary. Price: $395.
DragonDictate Personal: this Windows edition has a 10,000
active vocabulary. Price: $395.
DragonDictate Classic: this edition has a 30,000 active
vocabulary. Price: $695.
DragonDictate Power: this edition has a 60,000 active
vocabulary. Price: $695.
All editions require a pentium 90 MHZ machine or faster, at
least 16 megabytes of ram, and a SoundBlaster 16 or compatible sound
card. Each program comes with a microphone/headset. Dragon
International(TM) is available in U.S. English, British English,
French, Italian, German, Spanish, and Swedish. Features may differ

Kurzweil Voice Pad: This is a word processor which allows the
user to "write" using voice input. The software requires a sound
card and Windows 3.x or higher. Kurzweil Applied Intelligence.

Kurzweil Voice Plus: This is a voice activated system which
allows the user to control a computer. Requires Windows 3.x or
higher and a sound card. Kurzweil Applied Intelligence. Price:
$395.
Kurzweil Voice Pro: This system is also a means by which an
individual can control a computer using voice. This system has a
60,000-word vocabulary. Kurzweil Applied Intelligence. Price:
$595.
REFERENCE MATERIALS
Bitstream: Bimonthly cassette magazine on access technology.
ShrinkWrap Computer Products. Price: $22 per year.
Braille Key Caps: (item #223-312-0441) are Braille key labels
which can be applied to a standard keyboard. Hooleon Corp. Price:

Braille Reference Cards: Reference cards available for
WordPerfect, Lotus, Microsoft Word, DOS, ProComm, QWERTY, WordStar,
Quicken, and Dbase IV. For more information contact the National

C Programming: The C Programming Language by Kernighan and
Richie (considered to be the "Bible" of programming books in C
programming) is available in print and Braille. National Braille
Press. Cost is $24.95 for print and $24.95 for Braille (Braille is
a five-volume edition). Orders must be paid for in advance by either
check or money order or charged with Visa or MasterCard.
Cassette tape tutorials: Word 8 Fundamentals with JAWS for
Windows is a step-by-step instruction guide that teaches users how
to work through a wide variety of scenarios. Keystoke instructions
include layout orientation, navigating and editing a document, using
the spell checker, and the Microsoft Word Help system. Tutorial
documents are supplied with the cassettes on floppy disk. Cost is
$79.95 plus $10 for shipping and handling. Produced by Henter-Joyce,
Inc.
Cassette tape tutorials: Internet Explorer 4.01 with JAWS for
Windows gives users various components of the Internet Explorer 4.01
suite of products. Learning modules include using search engines,
electronic mail, web browsing, and creating a simple web page. Cost
is $79.95 plus $10 for shipping and handling. Available from Henter-

Cassette tape tutorials: A company called One-on-One Computer
Training has a wide variety of tutorials available on cassette tape.
They are intended for the general market but are generally usable by
blind persons. Subjects include computer operation, operating
systems such as Using DOS, Windows, Windows 95, and software
specific tutorials. Titles include Word for Windows, Excel,
Netscape, Dbase, Lotus 1-2-3, and more.
Cassette tape tutorials: Available tutorials include operation
of the Braille 'n Speak, using the Braille 'n Speak with a modem,
and ASAP screen review program. A Windows 3.1 tutorial is also
available. Top Dot Enterprises. Price: approximately $15 each.
Cassette tape tutorials: Topics include: WordPerfect 6.0 for
DOS, Telix, Commo, and a three-cassette series on the Internet. Talk
Me Through Tutorials. Prices begin at $20 for single-tape tutorials,
add $10 for each additional tape.
Cassette tape tutorials: Speaking of Windows 3.x and Speaking
of Windows 95. Speaking of Windows 3.x is recorded on four 90-minute

Listening to Windows CD Tutorial: An interactive tutorial on
CD-ROM that teaches Windows 95 basics. The tutorial consists of
seven units covering Windows navigation from the keyboard, file
management, and system configuration. A Windows screen reader and a
16-bit sound card are required in order to use this software. The
tutorial includes documentation in Braille, print, cassette, and
disk formats. Tactile diagrams are provided showing a number of

National Federation of the Blind in Computer Science: Write to

NFB NET: NFB NET is the computer Bulletin Board System or BBS
operated by the National Federation of the Blind. It offers
discussion areas on blindness and a variety of other subjects, the
Braille Monitor and other NFB literature, and a wide variety of
computer files. It supports baud rates from 300 to 28,800 and

are required. Cicero is fully compatible with the Hal screen reader

An Open Book: Stand-alone reading machine from Arkenstone,
Inc. Can also be converted into a standard IBM compatible computer
with the addition of a keyboard and screen review program. Price:

An Open Book Unbound: Software version of An Open Book.
Requires you to provide computer and access technology. Requires a
386SX or better. Arkenstone, Inc. Price: $995 for software, $1,594

Expert Reader: This is the latest stand-alone reading machine
from Telesensory. It is available in two models: The Expert Reader
Standard edition and the Express edition. The Standard edition
features a one-piece unit combining a scanner, microprocessor, and
software speech synthesis along with a 19-key keypad. This machine
allows the user to scan, edit, and save documents. The Express
edition is similar to the standard edition except that it features
a 9-key keypad and fewer available functions. It is designed for
people who only want to scan or read documents. Expert Reader
Standard edition price: $3,695. Expert Reader Express edition
price: $3,395.
Galileo: The newest stand-alone reading machine from Robotron
LTD. of Australia. Features a color scanner, 1-gigabyte hard drive,
and floppy drive. Uses SoundBlaster and Text Assist for its speech.

Kurzweil 1000: This is a software-based reading package from
Kurzweil Educational Systems. The software features OCR
capabilities, a 65,000-word dictionary, a spell-checker, and many
other editing functions. The program can be purchased with either
of the following software-based synthesizers: Flextalk from AT&T or
DECTalk Access 32 from Digital Equipment Corporation. Kurzweil

Rainbow: Stand-alone reading machine from Robotron, LTD. of

VERA (Very Easy Reading Appliance): Similar to the Open Book.=20

MISCELLANEOUS SOFTWARE AND DEVICES
Audiocad: This MS-DOS software uses a touch screen, a speech
synthesizer, and an ink print or Braille printer to allow blind
individuals to draw. The user determines where the elements that
will comprise the drawing should be placed, and the software "draws"
them. These elements are geometric shapes such as circles, squares,
lines, arrows, etc. Reprotronics Inc. Price: $495.
IBM Home Page Reader: This software provides an audio interface
to the World Wide Web. Using Netscape as your web browser, Home Page
Reader is designed to make web pages understandable when spoken. A
software speech synthesizer is provided but a screen reader is
required since any Netscape error messages will not be spoken by
Home Page Reader. Produced by IBM. Price: $150.
PW-Webspeak: This software is a "talking" web browser for
blind computer users. It attempts to arrange a web page in such a
way that it makes sense when spoken. The software requires Microsoft
Windows 3.1 or Windows 95. The Productivity Works, Inc. Price:
Unknown.
RoadRunner: This compact device allows the user to download
text files from a PC using Windows 95 software that is provided with
the unit. The files are read using a built-in DoubleTalk speech
synthesizer. File navigation is accomplished using a 12-key
telephone style keypad. RoadRunner stores up to three megabytes of
data. Manufactured by Ostrich Software and available from
ShrinkWrap Computer Products. Price: $349.
Talking Dictionary: Franklin Language Master 600SE miniature
talking dictionary. This device, which is based on one made for the
general public, measures about six inches square and is battery
powered. Speech is fully integrated. Franklin Electronic Publishers.

Hal 95: Hal is now available for Windows 95 and Windows NT. Hal

IBM Screen Reader/2: This is the IBM Screen Reader for OS/2 and

JAWS for Windows: This is Henter-Joyce's entry to provide the
blind computer user with Microsoft Windows 3.1, Windows 95, and
Windows NT access. Henter-Joyce, Inc. Price: $795 for Windows 95 and
Windows 3.1, $1,495 for Windows NT version. JAWS for Windows is
shipped with the Eloquence software speech synthesizer.
OutSpoken: Speech access software for Macintosh. Alva Access
Group Inc. Price: $495.
OutSpoken for Windows: Microsoft Windows access program. Uses
different DECtalk voices to represent different objects on the
screen. Alva Access Group Inc. Price: $595.
OutSpoken Ensemble 2.0 for Windows 95 and 98: This screen
reader is designed for users of both speech and Braille output. It
requires either a hardware or software speech synthesizer as well as

Protalk for Windows NT: This is Biolink's screen access

Windows Master: Microsoft Windows access program that works
like PC Master. It will use a Braille 'n Speak for both input and

WinVision: Microsoft Windows access program which requires an
Artic Technologies Synphonix 215 speech card or Transport external

KeyNote Gold Multimedia Synthesizer: This is a software speech
