Sounds like a driver problem, I would try loading a generic IDE CD-ROM
driver (http://nospin.com/pc/files001.html) in config.sys and mscdex.exe in
autoexec.bat. If the drive works alright, find the right drivers for
windows.

I have a friend whose CD-ROM works intermittently but most of the time not
at
all. When you try to run a music CD or data CD it says

Q:\ is not accessible
The device is not ready

I tried checking all the connections for the cables. They seem ok. Any ideas
what could cause this. As I said, it will work occasionally.

In device manager it says "this device is working properly". Under Driver
Tab
it says "no driver files are required or loaded".
