No recommendations or solution, but I can give an explanation.  CDR's and
CDRW's have a lower reflectivity than a normal CD.  This means the laser
has to be brighter or the reciever more sensitive to read them.  One or
both of these is not true in the notebook's CD, therefore not enough light
is being recieved.  This is a problem in many older CD-rom drives, even on
desktops.
