Jerry, this isn't quite the case. The problem is WIN95 and AMD K6-2 CPU's = or >
350 MHz. Usually upon booting you get a Windows I/O error directly after the
"Windows 98 is loading" message. I've had this happen on two 400 MHz machines.
Microsofts solution to the problem was "Install WIN98". AMD was offering a fix
for $, but I think you can get it for free now. Below I've included the original
KB article taken from the PCBUILD archive (LOG9811) There you can find a bit
more discussion about the same problem.
SYMPTOMS
========
When you start your Windows 95 OEM Service Release-based
computer that is using an AMD-K6-2 processor that runs at speeds
of 350 MHz and higher, you may receive one of the following error
messages:
- Device IOS failed to initialize. Windows Protection Error.
You must reboot your computer.
- Windows Protection Error. You must reboot your computer.
Note: This problem is very intermittent at 350MHz, but occurs
more often at higher speeds.
CAUSE
=====
The first error is a result of a divide exception in Ios.vxd, the
second is due to a similar error within Esdi_506.pdr or Scsiport.pdr.
The files listed in the RESOLUTION section of this article
contain initialization timing loops that fail to execute properly on
the AMD-K6-2 processor at speeds of 350MHz and above. Note that this
problem is due to limitations of the software algorithms, and is not
indicative of a problem with the processor itself, which is
functioning properly.
