The other alternative would be to find a 56K external modem. However, before
going there, you might want to check the UART and be sure it's a 16550...

The internal modem preinstalled on my Compaq Presario 2120 is a 36k
fax modem manufactured by Compaq and does not conform to industry
standards. The hardware is not capable of taking an upgrade to 56K
technology.

The only other option would be to find a voice/fax modem to fit into
an 8 bit isa slot.
