I was taught that a considerable proportion of our cellulosics digestion
occurs in the caecum, by micro-organisms that dwell there. If we get a
severe diarrhoea, and they get washed out, the system is replenished by
re-introduction from the appendix. It acts as a reserve tank. Geoff
